framework orientation

After reading chapter 3 in Intercultural Communication in Contexts there were two concepts that jumped out at me and made me think. The orientation presented by Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck and the orientation presented by Hofstede have different views that made me think about different values and aspects of culture that affect communication.

In reading the problems identified in Hofstede’s orientation those made me think about the dynamics of our country and I was able to relate to some of them. The two orientations that I connected the most to were power distance and femininity and masculinity. Power distance, according to our book, refers to the extent to which less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept the unequal distribution of power (Martin & Nakayama, 2022). This made me think about our country and even though we are a democracy we allow individuals in our government to make decisions and the amount of power they have over us despite the checks and balances in place to ensure our country remains a democracy. This also takes place within our jobs; we have higher ups that don’t even know our names or what we deal with, that make decisions and have all the power regarding what the company does or doesn’t do.

Masculinity-femininity value was also one that I connected with. According to Martin and Nakayama’s definition, masculinity-femininity value refers to the degree to which gender-specific roles are valued and the degree to which cultural groups value so-called masculine values (Martin & Nakayama, 2022). I related much to this because even though woman have made leaps and bounds in this country there are still inequalities with being masculine versus feminine. Being a female, this is something that hits home with me as I would hope that in todays age jobs would be based off someone’s experience and ability to do the job at hand. However, that is not the case as it still shows that men get paid more than women in some occupations. These problems are ones that I hope become few and far between as we continue to make strides in becoming mor culturally diverse.
